How Dad Jokes, Contactless Donations and Comic Relief Came Together to create impact for a Fundraising First

Writer: Laura BLaura B

Laughter is a universal language. Whether it’s a groan-inducing pun or a classic one-liner, humour has the power to connect us. But what if laughter could do more than entertain? What if it could drive impact, inspire generosity, and raise vital funds for charity?

That was the question at the heart of an ambitious new fundraising campaign for BBC Comic Relief. This year, Red Nose Day 2025 featured an innovative approach to giving, combining contactless donations with the timeless appeal of dad jokes.

The Evolution of Fundraising: Contactless Giving Takes Centre Stage

Fundraising has always evolved alongside technology. From coin collections on the streets to telethons and text donations, charities continually seek new ways to make giving easier. But as society becomes increasingly cashless, charities face a new challenge: how do you encourage donations when fewer people carry coins?

At Superspree, we are dedicated to modernizing charitable donations through contactless payment technology. Superspree creates tap-to-donate terminals, helping nonprofits and charities collect funds seamlessly in an era where mobile payments dominate.

For Comic Relief 2025, Superspree wanted to do something different—something that would grab attention, spark joy, and encourage generosity in a unique way.

Introducing the Red Nose Contactless Donation Terminal

The solution? A contactless donation terminal shaped like a Red Nose.

More than just a fundraising tool, this bioplastic device symbolized Comic Relief’s mission: using humour to change lives. But there was an extra twist—donors weren’t just invited to tap their cards. They were also asked to share a dad joke.

It may have seemed like a lighthearted gimmick, but research suggests that dad jokes have real value beyond making people cringe. A study from Penn State University’s College of Medicine found that parental humour—especially the groan-worthy puns we associate with dads—can strengthen relationships, build resilience, and help children develop social confidence.

Armed with this knowledge, Superspree took the Red Nose contactless donation terminal on a nationwide tour, visiting five cities across the UK.

Laughter and Fundraising on the Road: A Nationwide Impact

The tour took the Red Nose contactless donation device to:

📍 London📍 Milton Keynes📍 Manchester📍 Birmingham📍 Nottingham

At each stop, passersby were invited to tap-to-donate and share their best (or worst) dad joke. What followed was an incredible display of joy, generosity, and community spirit. Families laughed together, strangers exchanged jokes, and every tap of a card meant another donation for Comic Relief.

The results? A powerful demonstration of how contactless fundraising can do more than just raise money—it can bring people together, create shared moments, and make giving fun, easy, and memorable.
